How to Design a Denver Outdoor Area
While I love designing interiors and creating a home that serves and suits the daily needs of its inhabitants, I pay equal attention to the outdoor areas of a home. Whether it’s a spacious outdoor patio with ample room for entertaining or whether it’s a small, narrow balcony, the right design can enliven and make the outdoor areas of a home purposeful and fun. The video below showcases my Denver studio’s design for a large outdoor patio.
Here’s what to consider when designing an outdoor area in Denver:
FURNITURE & MATERIALS
Durable, high-functional materials are a necessity when it comes to outdoor furniture. This furniture will be subject to all the elements, so it should withstand heat, rain, and cold. Aluminum, steel, and wrought iron are excellent choices for patio furniture. Also, think about multi-purpose pieces. For example, a fire pit with a lid that can be closed off in summer works as a table, and in the cold, it will keep you warm as well. If my clients want to use wood for outdoor decor, I would recommend furniture made with teak, acacia, or cedarwood as these are strong and resilient to weather conditions. If my clients love to entertain outdoors, I ask them to consider investing in furniture that will keep them warm in winter. Find details about heated furniture in this blog that I wrote about entertaining outdoors during winter.
I love adding colorful pieces to outdoor design like this Selten Bench from my MB Home Collection — it’s the perfect perch that you can enjoy, even with your pets!
FABRIC AND UPHOLSTERY
High-functioning, high-performance fabrics are the ideal choice for outdoor use. I encourage my clients to think about maintenance when it comes to selecting fabrics. I ask them to consider how easy it is to wash and clean the fabric or choose colors that won’t fade easily due to sun exposure. If there are young children in the family or if the family loves to entertain outdoors, I recommend durable, stain-resistant fabric. The same logic applies to outdoor rugs and carpets as well.
ACCESSORIES
There’s lots one can do with accessorizing an outdoor space — from lamps and fairy lights to candles, artwork, and plants. I decide how to accessorize an outdoor area based on my clients’ tastes and lifestyles. If they love an elegant look, the decor is all about metal accents and sleek pieces, or if you prefer a more natural vibe, I’ll use plants and flowers to enhance the design language.
